Being Glue

Glue work is important, and rewarding, and it won't get you promoted.

I've always been drawn to glue work, but also felt the pain of hearing "the work you do is invaluable" while also being passed over for promotion.

Tanya does an excellent job telling the story of an engineer that keeps things running smoothly, but doesn't do a good job communicating the value they add to the business. Storytelling is the number 1 skill for any role, and is key to progression.

But most importantly, Tanya highlights that by "being glue", you might be taking away learning opportunities for others. If they're always successful because you fill in the gaps, how successful are they going to be in their next role when you're no longer there?

Distribute the glue work. It's better for everyone.
